Preregister now for the Seattle Animal Shelter’s 14th annual Furry 5K run/walk happening on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Seward Park. Each year, the fun run attracts thousands of two-legged runners accompanied by hundreds of four-legged runners. All proceeds directly support the Shelter’s “Help the Animals Fund.” To preregister or for more information, go to www.Furry5K.com.

The “Help the Animals Fund” was created in 1977 to pay for life-saving veterinary care for sick, injured and abused animals at the Shelter. As the Shelter’s veterinary needs grew, volunteers started the Furry 5K in 1999 to raise money for the Fund and to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership. Last year, the Fund covered nearly $150,000 in veterinary bills.

“The Furry 5K has been a wonderful event for the orphaned animals of the Seattle Animal Shelter. Because of the generous Furry 5K participants, we have been able to provide veterinary care to thousands of orphaned animals and have been able to guarantee that all adoptable animals will find loving new homes,” said Shelter Director Don Jordan.

Shelter staff anticipates that this year’s Furry 5K will draw more than 3,000 people and 1,500 furry canines. The race will begin at 10 a.m. and will be followed by Pet-a-Palooza, a partnership with CBS Radio to feature entertainment, festive music, awards and an interactive vendor area. The Furry 5K is one of the few races in the Puget Sound area that encourages participants to run or walk with their dogs.

The Seattle Animal Shelter cares for approximately 6,000 stray and owner-surrendered animals each year. Many of these animals arrive sick and injured from living on the streets; others are seized from abusive or neglectful owners.

The Shelter is located at 2061 15th Ave. W., about a mile south of the Ballard Bridge. It is open Wednesday – Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. for adoptions and licensing. For more information call (206)386-7387, or visit the Web site at www.seattleanimalshelter.org

SEATTLE – The Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) announced today that “Santa Paws” will visit The Alexis Hotel (1007 First Avenue in downtown Seattle) to pose for holiday photos with local pets and their owners as part of the Foundation’s annual holiday fundraiser. Photos will be taken Saturday and Sunday, December 8 and 9, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Alexis, A Kimpton Hotel, is co-sponsor of the event.

Pets and their owners may enter the hotel through the main lobby. All dogs should be on leashes, and cats and other furry critters should be in carriers.

With a $15 donation, each pet owner will receive access to a digital photo. Proceeds will go to the Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation, which supports existing Seattle Animal Shelter programs and helps pioneer new initiatives to enrich the lives of shelter animals. Past grants from the Foundation have subsidized spay and neuter services; sponsored adoption of special-needs animals; and provided training for shelter volunteers, who ensure that each animal receives loving care while at the shelter.

“‘Santa Paws’ is an annual tradition that offers local pet owners an opportunity to enjoy a special holiday event with their pet and receive a wonderful keepsake, while at the same time helping Seattle’s less-fortunate animals,” says Kara Main-Hester, manager of the

Seattle Animal Shelter’s volunteer program and fundraising activities, and a member of the SASF board of directors. “It’s a fun way to help make a difference in the lives of our city’s orphaned animals. The donations we raise will save lives and prevent pet homelessness.”

To make a donation to the Foundation, visit www.seattleanimalshelterfoundation.org/donate. To talk with an adoption counselor or preview animals for adoption, please visit the Seattle Animal Shelter at 2061 – 15th Avenue West, approximately one mile south of the Ballard Bridge.

SEATTLE — To commemorate Feb. 22, 2011, as the 17th annual “Spay Day,” the Seattle Animal Shelter’s Spay and Neuter Clinic is offering FREE spay/neuter packages to Seattle pets scheduled for surgery on Feb. 22, 23, 24, 25 or 28. The package includes vaccinations and microchip and is worth between $135 and $195. To schedule an appointment, call 386-4260.

To take advantage of this special offer, pets must have a current Seattle license or one may be purchased on the day of the appointment. For altered cats, a one-year license costs $20, $27 for two years; and for altered dogs, it’s $27 for one year, and $37 for two years.

This year’s special offer of FREE spay/neuter packages is made possible by a bequest from a shelter supporter in honor of her surviving companion animal, Onyx, a female cocker spaniel.

“We sincerely appreciate this generous bequest which enables us to make this special offer to commemorate Spay Day. I can think of no better way to honor a beloved pet than to try to help prevent unwanted births and reduce the needless suffering of homeless animals,” says Seattle Animal Shelter Director Don Jordan.

“Spay Day” is an international campaign of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International. During the month of February, animal shelters and animal welfare agencies throughout the world join forces to promote the spaying and neutering of pets as the most effective and humane way to decrease the euthanasia of homeless animals in shelters throughout the world.

“Spaying and neutering allows your pet to have a longer, healthier, happier life,” adds clinic Director Dr. Mary Ellen Zoulas.

Year-round the Shelter provides financial assistance through the city’s “Pet Population Control Fund,” to pet owners in need for spaying and neutering their pets.

There are several ways you can celebrate Spay Day in February and throughout the year:

· Donate to the “Pet Population Control Fund” at the Seattle Animal Shelter.

· Enter the Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest. For more information about the contest and about other Spay Day activities, go to the HSUS Web site: humanesociety.org/spayday

· Ask friends and family to vote for your pet’s photo at the HSUS site above. You can even add a vote button for your pet on your Facebook page. Each vote costs $1, which can be donated to the Seattle Animal Shelter Spay/Neuter Clinic.

· Turn in a litter. As part of an ongoing Seattle Animal Shelter program, anyone who turns in a litter of puppies or kittens to the shelter, is eligible for a free spay or neuter for the parent animal(s). In return, the shelter guarantees the adoption of these kittens and puppies, if they are adoptable.

· Talk to your friends, neighbors and family about getting their pets spayed or neutered. Year-round the Seattle Animal Shelter’s Spay and Neuter Clinic is able to help those in need with discounted or free spay/neuter surgeries.

For more information about Spay Day Seattle, to make a donation to the Pet Population Control Fund, or to learn more about other Seattle Animal Shelter services, call (206) 386-PETS (7387), or visit www.seattleanimalshelter.org.

SEATTLE – The Seattle Animal Shelter joins paws with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to recognize National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, Nov. 7-13, 2010. The shelter and HSUS encourage Seattleites to take a closer look at the valuable role played by their animal shelter and its volunteers in enhancing the quality of life in this community.

“We are proud to provide Seattle with a variety of services and community programs,” says Shelter Director Don Jordan. “We invite anyone interested in animal welfare to visit the shelter during the week of Nov. 7. (Remember we’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.) Take this opportunity to visit with the animals, meet the staff and volunteers, and learn how you can help the animals. Your involvement will go a long way in saving animals’ lives.”

There are many good reasons for adopting from shelters. Adopting gives a homeless animal a second chance in life and there is an amazing variety of animals from which to choose – from mixed breeds to purebreds. Second, if you adopt an adult animal, you already know the animal’s size, looks and temperament. Finally, by adopting from a shelter, you help reduce the suffering caused by the country’s tremendous pet overpopulation problem.

“Here at the Seattle shelter, we couldn’t do our lifesaving work without our dedicated volunteers. Volunteers perform many important tasks, including fostering cats and dogs, walking and training dogs, promoting off-site adoptions, fundraising and marketing the animal shelter,” Jordan says. “Our volunteers are indispensable.”

The Seattle Animal Shelter provides services for animals and people alike: controlling dogs running at large, rescuing injured animals, returning lost pets to their owners, and adopting animals into new, loving homes. Shelter staff also offers personal guidance to pet owners and prospective pet owners.

Here are ways you can help the Seattle Animal Shelter:

· Donate pet supplies, such as new toys, treats, and blankets for animals at the shelter or in foster care.

· Spread the word about the importance of responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering.

· Become a part of the shelter’s volunteer program.

· Report animal abuse.

· Choose your next pet from among the many animals being cared for at the Seattle Animal Shelter.

For more information about the Seattle Animal Shelter or to inquire about volunteer opportunities go to www.seattleanimalshelter.org or call (206) 386-PETS (7387). The Shelter is open Wednesday through Sunday noon to 6 p.m. for adoptions and licensing. It is located at 2061 – 15th Ave. W.
